Family Friendly Mystery Shopping project
Providing a better family visitor experienceNo Nonsense-Interpretation is developing 'Focusing on Families' a mystery shopping toolkit for the museums and galleries sector. Led by Shropshire Council, the toolkit has been developed by NN-I as part of a project involving the 5 other local authority Museum and Gallery Services in the West Midlands.
In the development of the project 18 museum and gallery staff 'mystery shoppers' have visited 35 attractions across the region. The project is a practical application of Dea Birkett’s Kids in Museums Manifesto and seeks to improve the family visitor experience and develop staff skills and awareness of familys' needs.
The toolkit consists of an interactive questionnaire and set of guidance notes that have been developed as part of an iterative evaluation process. The questionnaire considers all aspects of the family visit including arrival/trip stress, promotion, sense of welcome, facilities and services, engagement and accessibility. It provides guidance on simple steps that venues can undertake to make families feel more welcome and understood, as this is seen as a vital step to attract and engage with them.
Amongst proposals for the future of the project is to produce the toolkit as on online resource for museums & galleries staff in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
